DIRECTIONS:
Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School is a 1:1 school using
iPads. We will be working with art
teacher and UNI alumni Chelsie Meyer to create virtual art lessons using an
iPad for her 8th grade students.
You will receive an iPad to be checked out to you for the semester in
order to familiarize yourself with this technology. Students at WSR MS are very comfortable using
their iPads and understand how to use the apps on their pad and can easily
follow directions in regard to making art on it. Check out WSR MS art website: http://wsrart.weebly.com/
Your goal is to use those skills to teach them about art
making using the iPad. Remember the iPad is just another tool or medium to make
art with and one that you need to be comfortable with teaching. Over one hundred schools are 1:1 in Iowa and
the number continues to grow.
We will create iPad lessons and convert them into YouTube
videos to virtually send to the WSR MS students. They will watch the videos and
complete the lessons with Mrs. Meyer’s guidance. When completed they will
upload their work to VoiceThread, an interactive website (and iPad app) and
record their reflection on their art making process and product. You will then
use VoiceThread to respond back to them, in order to have a virtual or distance
critique. Check out VoiceThread: https://voicethread.com/
OR we may use educreations instead due to issues students at WSR have with free VT accounts.
The two apps are very similar, please download educreations app onto your iPad.
Begin your lesson plan thinking about the end result. What
do you want them to get out of the assignment? What will they create to get to
this end result? What new skills will they learn? How will you know if they reached success?
A.) Write out (at
least) 3 objectives:
1.) About
mastering a function on the iPad
2.) About
learning about new art skills
3.) About
thinking creatively and critically and applying prior knowledge and experiences
to this new lesson.
B.) Next think
about how you want to introduce the
assignment and the app they are using.
What will get the students’ attention? Will you use a video, artist
website, or other resources? How will
you get the students excited about your project without physically being there?
C.) How are you going to present the assignment to them?
1.) Create
a slide presentation? Make a PowerPoint or use Keynote app
2.) Demonstrate
with a tutorial video yourself demonstrating the lesson?
3.) Type
up a word document (handout) with directions?
4.) Make your own example piece using the app
5.) BE
EXPLICIT in your teaching
D.) Now plan
several ways to practice and check for
understanding
Stop this video and
…..
1.) a
brainstorming list or sketch an idea at your seat
2.) a
short quiz to check understanding
3.) a
review of steps out loud in class
4.) Pause
to think and plan and discuss it at your table.
E.) How will WSR MS students know what they are
being assessed on? You will be given a blank rubric to use for this
assignment. You will craft it to fit your needs.
(Remember to look at Mrs. Meyer’s great rubrics on her WSR
art room website for examples). Students need to see the assessment before they
begin the assignment so they aware of all the requirements and work towards the
grade they want to receive.
ALL videos must end with a rubric (SBG) and the
reflective questions you want them to focus on when they record their
VoiceThread. These also needed to be
turned into me so I can send them to Mrs. Meyer for her students to have on
their website and have access to for hard copy format.
VoiceThread- When
it is time for students to reflect on the assignment, what is the most
important components? Do you want them to create a short artist statement,
discuss challenges and successes, demonstrate the process and reflect on it, or
any other ways? Be thoughtful but also
mindful of their age.
Resources:
You will see some
examples from previous semesters to help you begin. I suggest that you follow
Mrs. Meyer on twitter and on Pinterest. Her iPad boards are filled with amazing
resources and great connections to other teachers working in 1:1 environments.
Review of assignment
and tips:
1.) Create
an iPad art lesson and convert it into a YouTube video
2.) Include
a rubric and reflective questions for VoiceThread at the end.
3.) Send
me your rubric and questions via email so students can access them without
having to go back to the video endlessly.
4.) When
creating your VoiceThread account, upload a picture of you for students to see
you.
5.) As
you respond to student work in VoiceThread, use the record, typing and drawing
feature to experiment with what works best.
6.) Crafting
feedback for middle school students is a delicate process. Be positive when
critiquing their work. Rather than focusing on weak areas, accentuate their
strengths and highlight places where they were creative and took risks!
7.) Remember
that we are guest teachers in this room and Mrs. Meyer is giving up a great
deal of her time with students to allow you this experience. Be courteous and
timely with your work and communication with her.
8.) Have
fun exploring art and technology with middle school students!
