Comic Assignment:

Issues and Theories : Comic Assignment:
Create a comic that reflects the teacher as change agent

1.) Read To Teach, by William Ayers

2.) Blog prompt: 11/5- Describe the challenges and opportunities that Bill faces in the schools and discuss examples from the comic he shares that you learned from. What problems did he face and how did he work around them. What examples did he share to inspire you to be the difference in schools today?

3.) Read Comic article by Dr. Rachel Williams, called Image, Text and Story.  Think about how Williams describes how comics are the crossover between contemporary art and visual culture.  Reflect on your comfort level and understanding of comics. How are comics be used as a way to explore literacy (not just reading the words… but more than that. )

4.) Exercises on teaching comics will be presented in class to help you warm up to teaching and making comics.

5.) You will last create a comic that illustrates how you see yourself making a difference in your future school?

Include the following:

·      2-6 panels – influenced by comic artists from class telling a narrative of your experiences, ideas for your vision of teacher as a change agent.

·      You can draw and ink your comic/add an accent color(s) –try colored pencils, watercolor pencils, or fine tip markers, watercolor paint,, etc…

·      Or use Comic Life app on the iPads. Draw your comic and then photograph the images and drop into Comic Life. Take real photos and use the photos to drop into Comic Life to tell your story.

·      Looking for good use of lines, thoughtful use of text, interesting frames, and a simple but effective message of Teacher as a change agent.

·      Have fun exploring comics and reflecting on your values as a teacher. Reflect on how this assignment could transfer to your future teaching and draw from the text.
