Ch 20 discussion with Stephen and Whitney

Hey all!

Today we are going to discuss and respond to Chapter 20.

Chapter 20 discussed how the metaphor can be used in the art classroom. It explained how the metaphor can act as a tool and lens and help students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and others. The chapter described how the walls and bridges unit and the “I am” project connected the students with their own culture and the cultures around them through the metaphor acting as a tool for social justice. The chapter related to our class through explaining how metaphors can be incorporated into our future classroom. It discussed how we can use it as a tool and lens for not only ourselves but for our students as well. Also, the chapter incorporated social justice themes and how to develop a sense of empathy by considering different perspectives and putting ourselves in other people’s shoes.

  1. “Metaphor, once regarded solely as an ornamental linguistic device, is now considered to be an essential process and product of thought. In art and in language, metaphor urges us to look beyond the literal, to generate associations and to tap new, different, or deeper levels of meaning.” pg. 151
  2. Utilizing metaphor as a tool helps us sort and organize information and its meaning, while a metaphor can also act as a lens which helps us form perspectives on our experiences.
  3. “It is not possible to understand other cultures without understanding one’s own; it is also not possible to understand fully one’s own culture until the encounter with another culture has put it in perspective.” pg. 156
  4. The chapter described the walls and bridges unit, which utilized metaphor as a tool to explore questions and issues and help the students put themselves in other people’s shoes.
  5. The student reflections that the chapter included were very insightful as one fifth grade student stated, “Art means doing your projects well, and respecting what you do. It also means working hard and being proud. Learning about art will never stop because there are no walls to your imagination. There are just bridges to new experiences and activities.”

Please answer these question in your next blog post!

  1. What tools would you use to help students understand the concept of the metaphor and looking at the section on social justice on page 156, how could students investigate the issues of “different and other” in society through the use of metaphor?
  2. Describe the student reflections in Chapter 20. How as a future teacher could you use the strategies from this chapter to encourage students to reflect on a deeper level about their work?
  3. What is your metaphor for teaching? Metaphors help us gain deeper understanding and express an idea in a different way. Create your own metaphor for teaching.

Here is an example of a teaching metaphor from the article below:

Teachers are gardeners, cultivating the mind by making sure the environment is rich, removing weeds to allow growth to occur.

Activity: Find or take an image that could visually represent your teaching metaphor.
Attach the image at the bottom of your blog by your teaching metaphor you created.
Peace!
