This discussion is over the arts-based service learning project and chapter 4.
1. Arts-based service learning provides a way for a classroom to interact with people and the community outside the classroom by going above and beyond a typical lesson. Why do you find it necessary to incorporate service learning projects in your future classroom? What might it look like?
2. In Curriculum of Imagination, it is said that a sensed gap and the effort to used to make changes to the gap can cause a spark in finding and closing other gaps. The example of Dennis that was discussed in chapter four could be an example of this phenomena. Can you think of a time in school when this happened to you? What did the teacher do that helped? What did you gain from it?
3. As artists, we can all relate to the idea of kinesthetic imagination discussed in the Curriculum of Imagination. One uses the hands most of the time without thinking, performing tasks on a daily basis with our hands, but when it comes to creating art, can you think of a time when you lost your thought process or control of what you were doing because your art took over? As a teacher, how can you take such an experience and translate it to the classroom so that your students can have experiences like yours, whether it's a lesson idea or maybe music playing while they are creating art?
Here are some images from the service learning project. Do you recognize anyone in here?
