Week 2 - Alyssa's post

STEM to STEAM...

The issue of adding art into STEM has been around now for several years. I think people are confused by the adding of art and making it STEAM.  They think that it’s the teaching of art or they believe that designing is the same thing as art. STEAM does not mean that teachers need to start teaching lessons solely on art, STEAM means applying art to everyday situations. It’s taking the projects and lessons of STEM to next level. It’s making students think in a more complex way and adding their personal touch to projects.

1. Describe ways you can focus on art in your lesson planning without losing the focus of STEM or taking away its main purpose.

2. How will you, as a future art teacher, include STEAM projects in your classroom? Is it our responsibility as future art teachers to encourage our schools to focus on STEAM instead of STEM?

3. In what ways is the Holmes Junior High project that we will be doing with the students a STEAM project?
