Week 3 Allison's post

It is important that as we move towards STEAM education, that the arts are not diluted in the process of being mixed into other subject areas. An arts-integrated approach helps ensure that art maintains its integrity. Learning through art making, applying skills from multiple STEM subjects, and collaborating are all important components of an arts-integrated approach to STEAM education.  As future art educators, it is our job to effectively integrate STEM subjects into our art classroom, so knowledge and skills transcend the boundaries of school subjects.

1.) As a future educator, how can you start out teaching STEAM lessons through arts integration (into STEM) and then move  to work to a more transdisciplinary approach to teaching STEAM art lessons?

2.) Discuss the ways you see advocating for STEAM education is elevating the importance of the arts in schools.

Please read this short newspaper article:
3.)  Much criticism has been shared about the low percentages of women in STEM fields (25%) and people of color, specifically Blacks and Hispanics (10%). This imbalance is often being countered by such programs being developed focusing on attracting minority groups to the STEM field. For example, at UNI, there is a summer camp called "Robotics for Girls." How do you feel about these initiatives and how could you encourage minority groups to get involved in STEM fields through STEAM art lessons?  (President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, 2010).
