The main idea I gathered from our readings this week is to promote Arts-based Service Learning projects because they benefit both students and the community equally. It is
also continuous, rather than just a onetime event. Students learn to be proactive
in their community and after the project ends in the classroom, they can still
incorporate what they have learned into their everyday lives, and other
people’s lives. Through making connections during these types of projects,
there is a push for advocacy and awareness for those who need it, and steps to
take action.
- Students both in Amanda Alexander’s article, and students that participated in Banners for Books felt a sense of pride, connectedness, and empowerment from participating in Arts Based Service Learning. Do you think an alternative school, like the one we saw in Paper Tigers could benefit from service learning projects?
- During our rain barrel project at Holmes, student’s opinions and perceptions changed throughout the service learning project. Which indicators on page 188, in the article by Amanda Alexander, played an important role in the student’s growth?
- What organizations would you like to pair with for your own service learning projects? Share some ideas you have and some concerns that come up as you brainstorm ideas for your own ABSL project. Include a link or image to help us understand your ideas.
