Adam and Ross lead ch 5

There is a lot of debate between public and private education and which is better for our
students. After reading this week's chapter, please discuss the following prompts and reflect
on the questions provided. Times are tough for arts education in the United States. Funding is down from 25-35%, and so is the amount of arts education in the schools. A result of privatized education and the emphasis on school choice is that visual and performing arts curricula are being reduced and even being eliminated as offerings for all students, and narrowed to ‘choice’ options for few. As arts educators, we already have the tools we need to organize, preserve, and strengthen our threatened system of public education, and we can take the lead in teaching strategies to our non-artist colleague educators.


1.) What sort of problems does the choice system bring to families searching for the best
education for their children? Have you experienced instances where a local school was not
the best option for you? If not, could you put yourself in their position and reflect on this
situation or vise versa, what happens when those who can move out and leave those who don't have the option to leave behind?

2.) The reading describes many pros and cons of working in private or public schools.
List a few reasons from the text and your own ideas, and reflect on how these reasons
could affect your decision to choose where to work for your future career.

3.) Gallery 37 is program in Chicago that provides intensive art classes no longer
offered in many public schools. The author shares that this program has a history of
censoring student artwork that they deem “inappropriate”. A student who was rejected by
G37 stated that, “Art is supposed to be controversial”. As an art teacher how would you
approach a student whose work may be considered controversial and what suggestions
would you give them to display it?
Upload an image of work that may be controversial created by yourself or someone else and
defend why the work should or should not be displayed publicly.
