I read about this artist who creates poster to bring about awareness of increase of anti-Asian hate crimes. Shin was able to find volunteers to translate the words “Use Your Voice” into 18 languages, including Arabic, Burmese, Tagalog, Tigrinya, Slovak and Serbian in order to make these posters inclusive. She also collaborated with a local non-profit to create beaded cloth pins for the cause.
I love this project because it reminds me that we need to be inclusive not only with our imagery and messages but in how we communicate that message through language. Students may be interested in writing in multiple languages.
I also enjoyed the idea of promoting messages through pin- creating. We could potentially make and bring pins to our students or have time to make the pins at the end of the project with our button maker.
There are many great artists organizing and creating inspirational projects. We can bring these into our classroom as ways to motivate and encourage student voice.
Here is one other place, Justseeds - check out for posters made by artists on important causes.
