“Many times in our lives, we choose the realities we live
in, even though deep down we know the real world does not go away.” This quote
from the reading “ Understanding the
Students We Teach: Poverty in the Classroom” really spoke to me, because I
feel a lot of people in the world choose to stay in their comfort zone. When
was a time you chose to go out of your comfort zone to see another perspective?
What did you experience from it? Explain.
In “Lessons from
Teachers” the author Lisa Delpit talks a lot about context in the classroom
and the importance of context. What negative outcomes would come of low-income students
if educators do not implement context? How might you as a future educator apply
context in a classroom of low-income, African American children?
The reading explains that understanding a students culture
is vital, and that representation of a culture is important to learning. Name
at least 3 African American artists that you could have in your future
lesson. (Try to not repeat artists from
other blogs please! J)
Here is a great artist to consider: Alma Woodsley Thomas - Expressionist painter (1891-1978)
